How I Fell in Love with My Locs (and Myself)

Starting my loc journey was never just about hair—it was about healing. I remember standing in front of the mirror looking at my big fro, feeling unsure, vulnerable, yet quietly excited. I was finally letting go of other people’s expectations and embracing my natural crown, the way I wanted to.

The early months were challenging. Frizz, awkward stages, and unsolicited opinions tested my confidence. But I kept pushing through. I nourished my roots with Carol's Daughter Black Vanilla Hydrating Leave-In Conditioner, massaged my scalp regularly, and allowed my hair and my self-love, to flourish.

2 years later, my locs have grown a little past my shoulders, thick with stories, strength, and softness. And when I apply my favorite Pat McGrath Labs MatteTrance Lipstick in “Elson,” I feel like the woman I dreamed of becoming—bold, rooted, and free.

For anyone considering starting locs: go for it. Be patient with your hair and gentle with your heart. You’re not just growing hair—you’re evolving into your true self.
